The art of paying attention · Inside ALMA

The person
behind the camera.

Sofia Alvim has built a way of working defined by light, patience and an almost stubborn honesty — at weddings and at home.

Sofia grew up in Lisbon, between her grandfather’s darkroom and her mother’s stack of magazines. She studied fine art, spent six years photographing for fashion and travel editorials, and photographed her first wedding — a friend’s, in a garden in Sintra — almost by accident.

“It was the first time I had photographed something that mattered more than the photographs,” she says. “I never went back.”

Twelve years later, ALMA photographs around twenty-five weddings a year, in Portugal and across Europe. The number is deliberately small: every couple gets her full attention, from the first call to the final album.

“I am not trying to make a wedding look perfect. I am trying to make it look like it felt — so that in twenty years you can open the album and be there again.”

How I work

  1. 01

    Quiet

I work without fuss and without a long list of poses. Most of your guests won’t remember I was there.

  2. 02

    Honest

Real light, real colour, real people. Nothing is staged that could have simply happened.

  3. 03

    Whole

The vows and the speeches, yes — but also the waiting, the details, the grandmothers, the end of the night.

In numbers

“My grandmother cried when she saw the album. Then she asked for a copy of her own.”
